Tawang Monastery

Tawang is a beautiful city, surrounded by the top of the mountains. Tawang is located in Arunachal Pradesh of Northeast India. There are many beautiful lakes with crystal blue water in or around Tawang like Sela Lake, Sangetser Lake, Banggachang Lake, P.T. Tso Lake. These lakes become frozen during winter period and become heaven for thousand of migrate birds during summer.



Tawang is land of Monpa Buddhist. Tawang is birthplace of Mahayana Buddhism. There is famous Monastery named Tawang Monastery. This Monastery is the second biggest & oldest in Asia. This Monastery is known as the Tawang Ganden Namgyal Lhastse i.e., the celestial paradise of divine site chosen by the horse was founded by Merag Lodore Gyamtso in the year 1680-81. The Dalai Lama gave him a painting of Goddess Palden Lhamo to be kept in the Monastery. In this Monastery approx 450 houses where approx 950 Buddhist Monpa lives here. Tawang Monastery has a residential building for the monks, a library, a museum and school for the basis eduction. Pierced atop a hill dominating everything around and below it is an enormous yellow-roofed Tawang monastery which was originally a large and fortified complex strategically sited where the caravan routes from Tibet, Bhutan and west Kameng met. The place is also famous with the legend of 07th Century A.D.
There is another famous monastery near by Tawang "Urgelling Monastery" It was established in the 15th century. This place of Tsangyang Gyatso, the sixth Dalai Lama. The monastery is of great historic importance.



Important Information for Tourist:
Indian tourist need to apply Inner line permit (ILP) while going to visit Arunachal Pardesh.

 For International tourist need to apply protected are permit (PAP) while you are going to apply visa for India where you can mentioned in the Visa form. Please try to apply before 01 month because PAP approx take 30 days from Ministry of home affairs of India for approval

Minimum 02 person require to visit this area. Single tourist is not allowed.
In case if you are in India & wants to visit Arunachal Pradesh shall have to pay USD 50 per person as Royalty to the Pradesh & application for PAP are to be applied through local approved tour operators only.

 Routing: I would like to suggest you if you are planning to visit Tawang so better you start your journey from Guwahati. Guwahati have a lot of domestic as well as International flights connection from Singapore, Bhutan & Thailand etc. Tawang is far from Guwahati but try to make customized package tour approx 05 Nights / 06 Days or more.
