Lets Start Trekking with RV of David Scott Trail
The good thing of this trek is we can start trekking from both side of village, starting from Mawphlang village makes it more of a descending trail. Start trekking Mawphlang village and till you notice a resting place called ‘Ka Kor Ka Shonmai’. This is named after a daughter of Dorsing Lyngdoh, the 1st Lyngdoh with the British, and acts as the primary trail identification point for the David Scott’s Trail. Follow the mud path winding down for another 02 km to a place called Mawsahep, where you find a Tomb. This tomb was erected in 1843 in the memory of a Child fondly called Camilla. Here you can also refill your water bottle & take rest.

Continue trekking follow a winding path overlooking Umiam river, Simpanghang Falls and part of Mawphlang Dam. ‘Umiam’ quite literally translates into the flood of tears. According to legends, the river was formed by the tears of a sister who came down from the heaven losing her sibling en-route. After 03 km trek Walk through the hanging bridge over the Umiam river. This military-built bridge acts as the perfect entry into the forest. It will take 20 minute to cross this bridge. En route explore the beauty of hills, forest, natural and take photographs.

History of David Scott Trail
David Scott was one of the first British English Officer, who was sent to Northeast India during the British Period during the East India Company Rule. His operations stretched for almost 30 years (1802-1832) and were mostly in the Khasi Hills and the surrounding areas. Under his order, a horse cart trail was laid down across the hills and jungles from Assam to Sylhet in Bangaladesh. Earlier Sylhet was part of India. This route was almost 100 km long and was used to carry goods from 01 place to another place. His services as the Commissioner of Revenue Circuits on the north east frontier covered areas that are modern day Bangladesh, Assam and Meghalaya.
This route was also the cause of the war between U Tirot Singh, king of Khadsawphra Syiemship and the British. The Anglo-Khasi War went continue 4 years. The Khasis tribe people lacked firearms and had only bows and arrows, swords and shields and were obviously untrained in the British way of warfare. Tirot Singh and the other Khasi leaders soon found out that they were no match for the well trained British soldiers and so resorted to guerrilla warfare. This continued for 4 years until Tirot Singh was captured and deported to Bangladesh, where he died in 1835 & his life was ended in Bangladesh.

How to Reach Shillong, Meghalaya

By Air: Meghalaya’s only airport is in Umroi which is around 35km from Shillong. Due to its poor connectivity, the other International airport that people use to travel to Meghalaya is the Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati which is 128 km from Shillong.

By Rail: There’s no train station in Meghalaya and subsequently, no railways lines as well. The closest one is in Guwahati. It’s roughly 110 km away from Shillong and can be used to arrive at the capital of Meghalaya. The Guwahati station is well connected with all the other cities in India and is often used as a conduit into the state of Meghalaya too.

By Road: Meghalaya Transport Corporation is well connected to several cities within the state as well as neighboring states. The highway that connects Guwahati to Shillong is NH-40 and it is well-maintained and easy to navigate. If you want to go sightseeing, then you can book a cab to take you around. Travelling by road in Meghalaya during the monsoons however can prove to be a bit challenging because of slick roads, but otherwise, this is a good way to reach the state.
