Permit is one of the most important document to visit Spiti Valley. Permit need for both tourists Domestic and Inbound means Indian & Foreigner Tourists to visit restricted area like Spiti Valley, Leh, North East India and other remote destinations in India. Permit require specially those area which is very close to International boundaries. Inner Line Permit & Protected Area Permit Information to Explore Spiti Valley

There are 02 permits 
01: Inner Line Permit (ILP) - This permit for Indian citizens only
02: Protected Area Permit (PAP) - This permit for Foreigner Tourists only.

Information for Indian Tourists to Visit Spiti Valley
For Indian Tourists don't need any type of permit to visit Spiti Valley. There are few trek which comes in remote area and connected to Tibet boundary, that area 99% Tourist do not prefer to go & visit. Indian Tourists need to carry original Government photo ID proof may be police can stop en-route for verification. But other destinations like Leh (Near to Indo-China Border and Indo - Pak Border) and North East India these parts Indians need to apply Inner Line Permit to explore.  

Indian Tourists travelling to Spiti Valley from Shimla then you do not need any type of permit. If you are travelling from Manali to Spiti Valley via Rohtang Pass then you need vehicle permit for Rohtang Pass & visit India - Tibet Border at Kaurik & Shipki La while you are travelling with your own vehicle. In case you hire any tourist taxi from Manali for Spiti Valley then you don't need to arrange vehicle permit. Taxi driver will arrange by them self. 

Information for Foreign Tourists to Visit Spiti Valley
Foreign Tourists travelling to Spiti Valley from Shimla then there is no need for Protected Area Permit till Reckong Peo only. After Reckong Peo next travel destinations like Nako, Pooh, Tabo, Dhankar & Kaza need to obtain Protected Area Permit. When you will cross the Reckong Peo then there is checkpoint where every tourists need to register yourself with valid permit to visit next level. Permit photo copy you have to submit here then you will go next destination.  

Foreign Tourists coming from Shimla side then, Protected Area Permit can be obtain from DM office in Shimla & Reckong Peo. In case coming from Manali side then, Protected Area Permit can be obtain from DC office in Keylong, ADM office Udaipur & Rampur. 

To get Protected Area Permit Government office open from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM. It takes approx 02 hour to get permit. Government office closed every Sunday & Second Saturday of the month also Government Holiday. 

Foreign Tourists travelling to Spiti Valley from Manali then there is no need for Protected Area Permit till Kaza only. After Kaza next travel destinations like Tabo & Dhankar need to obtain Protected Area Permit. You can get permit itself in Kaza. Also need permit for Rohtang Pass.

Note:
Kindly carry with you multiple photocopy of permit with you to deposit different - different check post.
There is only 02 week validity of PAP from issuing date. If you need more time to explore then you have to apply fresh again after completing first one.

Permit Fee & Charges for Spiti Valley
Official there is no charges for Permit. Please keep ready all documents during applying for the Permit. If you need faster service to get Permit then you pay a small amount approx INR 200 PP  for local Travel Agent then, they will arrange you soon. 

Permit is not allowed for Single Traveler / Solo Traveler. While you are applying Permit from Shimla then minimum 04 Pax require to travel in a group for Spiti Valley. In case you are applying from Reckong Peo then minimum 02 Pax require to travel in a group for Spiti Valley.

  1. Unlike other parts of the Himalayas, in Spiti Valley, you can’t think of camping out in the wild, away from civilizations. Gusty winds and an unfriendly terrain make it too tough.
