Tabo Village
Tabo Village is a small land of Lamas located in Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh in India. The beautiful Tabo Village lies on the road between Kaza & Rekong Peo. The attractions of this Village is beautiful Monastery & design of  mud houses with their paintings. This Village is located 10800 Ft high altitude from the sea level. Tabo was founded by the members of Royal Dynasty of Purang Gunge in west Tibet. Dalai Lama has expressed his desire that he wants to live & back to Tabo, since he maintains that the Tabo Monastery is one of the holiest. In 1996, the Dalai Lama hosted the Kalachakra initiation ceremony in Tabo, which coincided with the millennium anniversary celebrations of the Tabo Monastery. The ceremony was attended by thousands of Buddhists from across the world.  

Tabo Monastery
Tabo Monastery is an oldest Monastery. It was established in 996 CE. Tabo Monastery's is a spiritual head of Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche. This Monastery complex has nine Temples and several Stupas—all of which are made in mud with beautiful paintings and have been standing like this for more than 1000 years. The main Temple is an assembly hall where all Monks used to pray together. This hall has all its walls painted with Buddhist stories. There are stories of the life of Shakyamuni Buddha and various Bodhisattvas. Tabo Monastery is famous as Ajanta of the Himalayas. It is said that the wall of this Monastery have amazing murals paintings of Caves of Ajanta. There are 33 stucco sculptures of Bodhisattvas on the walls with their names mentioned for recognition. You can go around the hall and admire the amazing mural paintings, some of which date back to the time when the monastery was built, but most of them are from a later period when probably conservation work was carried on. The paintings do seem to be inspired from Ajanta paintings though the style of is a bit different. Rest of the Temples are usually closed, but Monks might open the gate for you on a special request or any procession. These Temples belong to Buddhist deities by Tara and Buddha Maitreya. Photography is not alowed of the mural paintings inside the Monastery but Guest can do photography outside the complex area. Tabo Monastery preserves the renowned traditions and heritage of Buddhism with very complicated Mural paintings. This rich heritage site in the cold desert of Tabo Village and covered with high walls of mud bricks is highly revered by Buddhist monks and comes second after Tholing Gompa in Tibet.

Tabo Caves
Tabo Caves is one of the quiet and serene places in Spiti Valley. It is one of the main tourist attractions. The cave is also the oldest monastery in India which was founded in 996 AD. Tabo is the largest Monastic complex in Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh in India. 
On the hill top of the Tabo, there are lot of beautiful caves with colorful Buddhist flags fluttering outside. At first, it is difficult to make out whether these are natural or man-made caves. Some of these caves are even multi-storeyed. Incidentally, one of the caves up there is also a part of Tabo Monastery complex that is now under the Archaeological Survey of India. A flight of steps take you to this cave on the hill that has a small temple and a hall like chamber where prayers and other rituals were performed. A small kitchen attached to this mud cave is where Monks used to cooking. There are many caves where tourist can not reach beacuse of hilly and dangerous route. Tourists can take picture from a long distance. From these caves, you get a lovely panoramic view of Tabo village and its Monastery with the colorful Spiti River and the towering mountains forming the backdrop.
Many of the Caves Monks used to practice of meditation. It is believed that these Caves served a a hermitage for Buddhist Monks, who once meditated here hundreds of year ago,  

Best Time to Visit Tabo
Summer season May till August is the best time to visit Tabo. Temperature during these days Minus 05 degree Celsius to 18 degree Celsius. 
During winter Tabo closed for tourist because temperature goes these days Minus 15 degree Celsius to Minus 40 degree Celsius.
