Lets discover & know the reality of this Lake.

Roopkund

Roopkund, a remote lake high in the Indian Himalaya, it is a high altitude glaciar lake located in Wan Village, District Chamoli in Uttarakhand state of India. It lies in the lap of Trishul peaks of Himalayas. Roopkund is  a popular trekking spot and is also famous as the “ lake of skeletons”

Roopkund Lake is some 16,000 feet above from sea level, at the bottom of a small valley, was a frozen lake absolutely full of skeletons. That summer, the ice melting revealed even more skeletal remains, floating in the water and lying haphazardly around the lake’s edges. Something horrible had happened here.

Discovery of Skeletons Lake

The lake of mystery hidden in the high reach of the Himalayas is guarded by the giants Nanda Ghunti & Trishul peaks. These peaks are located on the borders of Garhwal in Chamoli district and Kumaon area of the Bageshwar district. And in the between these peaks, Roopkund lake is located.

The beauty of the lake is mesmerizing as the soft sun rays fall over mountain ranges, on to the lake. Its coverd white blanket during winter and become frozen lake. With snow-covered peaks surrounding the lake, and the mythology and folklore in mind, the ambience of the lake is exceptionally magical. Roopkund is 03rd world best trekking route.

Myths of Roopkund

Mystery of Roopkund Lake is not a new thing and has been dated back to around six decades. Since the Skeletons are in large numbers seen, it has become a matter of concern during that period. As we all know, mysteries and stories behind them always fascinate tourist, explorers, researchers, historians, and even local people, all these people who have gone to explore that place put forward a different story and perception, and i read & listen a lot of people, finally i dicided to tell you the reality through my blog. The mystery is the skeletons found in or around the lake and one can really see the human skeletons in the water and on the banks of the lake while the ice melting in summer period.

According to the scientific researches, the skeletons remains are of 9th century AD. The scientists also performed some tests and DNA tests over the skeletons revealed that these skeletons belong to different groups of people. The genetic compositions had a resemblance to Iranians and locals. There are many stories and some myths related to Roopkund. However, with the mysterious touch and stunningly beautiful landscapes around, Roopkund attracts many adventure traveler around the world. But finally, in 2013 the Scientists concluded that the skeletons of about 200 people discovered near the frozen lake belonged to the people of a 9th-century Indian tribe who died due to the hail storm.

In 1942, the skeletons were found for the first time by a British forest guard. At that time, it was believed that the skeletons were those Japanese soldiers who had disappeared in this isolated area and died because of terrains' overwhelming condition. Who had died while crossing that route during World War II.

Mystery Solve

But scientists have now found out & reach the final stage decisions that the skeletons were of pilgrims and locals as the skeletons dated to around 850 AD. Research reveals that the skeletons were of two main groups – one a family group and the other who was relatively short.

The researchers concluded about Roopkund Lake & their human skeletons that death was due to a fatal blow on the back of their heads and not due to any wound by weapons, avalanche or landslide. There were marks on their skulls and shoulders indicating that they might have been hit by something round, like a cricket ball. As there were no injuries to other body parts so probably that hard round objects were possibly cricket ball sized hail stones or ice balls, fell from above.

One more popular explanations through DNA matching suggests that a group of around 200 pilgrims who came from Maharashtra to Nanda Devi Raj Jat (It happens once every 12 years) became victim to an avalanche. Another popular history is about General Zorawar Singh of Kashmir, and his men, who are said to have lost their way and perished in the high Himalayas, on their return journey after the Battle of Tibet in 1841.
